Giving Kitchen: An Advocate for Hospitality Workers in Need
Giving Kitchen (GK) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing emergency assistance to food service workers in times of crisis. In collaboration with GK, we are committed to supporting the well-being of those who tirelessly serve our communities through the hospitality industry. This partnership not only reflects our values of compassion and community support but also highlights the positive impact on both workers and businesses within the food service sector.
Giving Kitchen has been a beacon of hope for over 11,415 food service workers, having awarded more than $7.6 million in financial assistance. In 2019, the James Beard Foundation honored it as the Humanitarian of the Year, and Fast Company recognized GK as one of the Brands That Matter in 2022. GK's mission is to foster a food service community where crisis is met with compassion, care, and crucial resources.
One of the key pillars of Giving Kitchen's support is its provision of financial assistance to food service workers facing various crises such as illness, injury, lay-offs, bereavement, or housing disasters. In times of need, GK ensures that these workers can continue to meet their financial obligations, preventing eviction and hunger. Through the Stability Network, GK connects individuals in crisis to a wide range of resources, addressing needs related to housing, utilities, health and wellness, employment, and more. This comprehensive network provides a safety net for food service workers who may not be aware of the support available to them.
In addition to financial assistance, Giving Kitchen is deeply committed to the mental well-being of food service workers. The Stability Network includes mental health resources, and GK provides free Question, Persuade, Refer Suicide Prevention Training for any food service worker in America. The Substance Abuse Recovery Initiative further supports those undergoing inpatient treatment by helping with living expenses.
Foodservice is a cornerstone of our economy, yet it employs some of the most vulnerable individuals. Giving Kitchen plays a crucial role in keeping families together, preventing homelessness, and instilling hope during challenging times. In a recent survey, 75% of GK financial assistance clients reported that GK helped prevent eviction, while 68% reported that they didn't have to skip meals to pay bills.
